Julia Becker at the IceCube meeting in Berlin
IceCube is the most suitable instrument for observing neutrinos from astrophysical plasmas. The measurement of neutrinos is essential for understanding the structure of shocked plasmas that occur, for example, in supernova remnants, active galaxies, and gamma ray bursts. IceCube members meet every six months to discuss the status of the experiment, new analysis techniques, and the development of theoretical models of neutrino emission. As part of the Research Department, Jun.-Prof. Dr. Julia Becker's group participated in the meeting in Berlin (September 19-25, 2009). Here, Dr. Jens Dreyer was able to give a talk on the progress of his analysis on point source stacking and discuss both his analysis and the underlying theoretical models with other members of IceCube, including those from the USA, New Zealand, Japan, Switzerland, Sweden, Belgium, and Germany. Martino Olivo gave two talks on neutrino production in Gamma Ray Burst. A publication, also based on discussions that have been held in Berlin at the meeting, has now been submitted to "The Astrophysical Journal". For this, special discussions were held with Prof. Francis Halzen, head of the IceCube experiment. Julia Becker was Chair for the sessions on neutrino emission from Gamma Ray Bursts and was able to have further discussions on neutrino production in shocked plasmas with various members of IceCube.

ISPC 19
ISPC is a bi-annual international conference with topics encompassing the whole area of plasma chemistry and plasma processing science. The aim of the Symposium is to present the recent progress in plasma chemistry and its applications. Contributions are solicited in basic and applied areas. Prior to the Symposium the European Summer School on low pressure and thermal plasmas will be held.
The official language of the School and the Symposium is English.
The 19th International Symposium on Plasma Chemistry started on July 26th and ended July 31, 2009. The Bochum Plasma Center thanks all participants for coming to Bochum. We really enjoyed hosting almost 650 colleagues from over 40 nations and wish that you were inspired and intrigued by the lectures and posters being presented at the symposium. See you at the next ISPC.
Nähere Informationen finden Sie hier.
The next ISPC will be held in Philadelphia.

Julia Becker at the Cosmic Ray Conference in Lodz, Poland
At the Cosmic Ray Conference in Lodz, Poland (July 7-15, 2009), first results obtained by Jun.-Prof. Dr. Julia Becker and Dr. Dreyer within the Research Department could be presented [1]. Furthermore, further steps could be discussed with internationally renowned scientists. More than 1000 physicists (plasma astrophysicists, astroparticle physicists and astrophysicists) participated in the conference.

New DAAD project (PPP) with Serbia
In December 2009, the DAAD and Ministry of Science of Republic of Serbia gave the green light for starting the joint project of Gaseous Electronics Laboratory (Institute of Physics, Belgrade University) and our Forschergruppe “Physics of Microplasmas”, Project A4 (Research Dep. “Plasma Physics with Complex Interactions”). The participators are from the Gaseous Electronics Group Prof. Zoran Lj. Petrović, Dr. Dragana Marić and Nikola Škoro, PhD student and form the Reasearch Department Prof. Jörg Winter, Dr. Ilija Stefanović and Thomas Kuschel, PhD student. Thus the both groups share the common interest in the new developing field of microplasmas this colaboration will intensify our contacts and exchange of the young scientists for the next two years. The first visit of Belgrade group will be at the and of the March during the International Workshop «Diagnostics of Microplasmas» where D. Marić from Belgrade shall give an invited lecture.

Visit of the Queen's University in Belfast
Dr. Volker Schulz-von der Gathen and research student Arthur Greb visited the partner group of Timo Gans at Queen's University in Belfast, Northern Ireland, from February 19th to 21st, 2009. Common comparative measurements on oxygen detection in the micro plasma jet were discussed. A reserach visit of a Belfast student has been agreed upon. Arthur Greb presented a setup for ozone concentration measurements by UV absorption spectroscopy. A second topic of discussions were micro plasma arrays. Here, D. O'Connell is the main partner at QUB.
